U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss recently made waves in the political sphere when he opted to allow an artificial intelligence (AI) speaker to deliver a speech on a bill he had authored. The bill, if passed, would create a U.S.-Israel artificial intelligence center, and Auchincloss chose to outsource the task of delivering the speech to a machine.
Many questioned the decision to allow a machine to deliver such an important speech, but Auchincloss was confident in the capabilities of the AI speaker and the potential impact it could have on the advancement of artificial intelligence.
“I believe that the use of artificial intelligence is essential to furthering our understanding and ability to communicate in ever-evolving ways,” Auchincloss said in a statement regarding his decision. “I wanted to demonstrate to my colleagues and the public that I am committed to the utilization of AI and ready to embrace it as a tool for progress.”
Auchincloss also highlighted that his decision was a direct reflection of his belief in the power of technology and the future of AI. He highlighted that the U.S.-Israel Artificial Intelligence Center was only one of the many ways that AI could be used to benefit society, noting that AI had already helped humans in numerous ways, such as aiding in medical diagnoses and helping to improve the accuracy of weather predictions.
The speech was well-received by those in attendance, including many of Auchincloss’ colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives. The speech was a success and likely helped to secure more support for the bill, which passed shortly after the speech was delivered.
Even though the decision to allow an AI speaker to deliver a speech was a bold move, it appears to have paid off in this case. Auchincloss’ decision to trust in the capabilities of artificial intelligence was a testament to the potential of AI and may have opened up more opportunities for the utilization of AI in the future.
