Valve’s monthly hardware and software survey provides insight into the usage of SteamVR, the virtual reality platform from the developer of the popular Steam game store. The survey covers all VR headsets that were connected to computers with Steam installed during the month and whose users participated in the data collection. The statistics show the percentage of SteamVR users in the total Steam user base.
In January 2023, the highest usage value was 2.19 percent. This means that, assuming an average of 132 million monthly users on Steam in 2021, approximately 2.9 million people were using SteamVR. This is slightly lower than the 2.31 percent recorded in May 2021.
The following is a breakdown of the market share of VR headset devices covered by Steam in December 2022. Devices with less than half a percent market share are not listed.
Oculus Rift S (17.11%)
Oculus Quest 2 (14.47%)
Pico Neo 2 (8.02%)
HTC Vive Cosmos (7.26%)
Valve Index (4.81%)
Oculus Quest (2.76%)
Pico Neo 2 Eye (2.59%)
Pico 4 (1.25%)
The Pico 4 saw a surprising grow in usage, with an increase of 0.44 percent since December 2022. This suggests that budget-friendly headsets are becoming more popular in the VR space. However, overall PC VR usage disappointed, with a decrease of 0.84 percent since December 2022.
It is important to note that these statistics do not take into account the entire virtual reality market. They fail to include users who do not have Steam installed or do not participate in Steam data collection, as well as PSVR players and Meta Quest 1 & 2 users who only use their VR headset standalone. As a result, SteamVR statistics only provide a snapshot of the overall VR market.
